GPS Satellite Visibility

Satellite visibility is the ability of a receiver to sense or receive a signal from a satellite. GPS radio coverage is a geographic area that receives a GPS radio signal above a specified minimum level. A GPS receiver typically requires a clear radio channel to at least four satellites. If there are more than 4 visible satellites, the receiver may be able to select which ones will provide the most accurate signals (satellite geometry) or it may be able to use more than 4 GPS signals to improve its position accuracy.

GPS satellites are medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites which move at approximately 7,000 miles per hour relative to the surface of the Earth. This means that satellite visibility will be lost as the satellite moves over the Horizon and new satellites will become visible as they come over the horizon. 

GPS satellites are divided into groups that rotate the surface of the Earth in 6 patterns (orbital planes). This constellation helps to ensure that from most locations on the Earth, at least 4 GPS satellites will be visible at any time.
