GPS Post Processed Kinematic - PPKPost processing is the performing of operations on information or data that occurs after the event that created the information or data has occurred. To perform post processing, the GPS receiver stores its information in a data file (data logging). The data log is then updated with an observation file to provide more accurate position information. A data logger (also called a data recorder) is a data storage device that can store measurement data over a period of time (such as from a GPS receiver). An observation file is a collection of data that represents the measurements (observations) of a device or system (such as GPS satellite position and related information parameters). Figure 1.10 shows how the GPS system can use post processing to improve the accuracy of position information. This diagram shows that the initial position measurements are calculated using estimated satellite position data. This diagram also displays that the GPS tracking stations can provide more accurate position information after the GPS information was captured. The more precise GPS satellite location can be used to determine more accurate position measurements.
