An operational control segment - OCS is the portion of a satellite system that is responsible for tracking and controlling the orbit of the satellites. ![]() This figure shows that a GPS system contains three key segments; a user segment, space segment and a control segment. The user segment receives the signals from four or more satellites to calculate its' position. The satellite segment creates time related and satellite position messages and transmits them on two frequencies to the user devices. The satellite segment also receives an uplink control and position data from the ground segment. The ground segment controls the position of the satellite above the Earth as it rotates and sends ground position reference information to the satellite. GPS Quick Course, 2nd Edition Books
