The ionosphere is the region of the atmosphere that extends from approximately 80 km to 400 km above the surface of the Earth. Because this region has radio characteristics that are different than the Earth's surface, radio waves between 2 MHz and 50 MHz are bent (refracted) back towards the Earth. The actual distance between the transmitter and where these radio waves return to the Earth can range from 500 to 3000 miles. Because the ionosphere characteristics can change during the day, this refraction distance can also change. GPS Books
