A satellite system where the satellites are located approximately 23,500 miles above the Earth. GEO systems are unique because at the specific height of 23,500 miles, the rotation of the Earth matches the rotation of the satellite resulting in the appearance of a fixed location of the satellite relative to the surface of the Earth. ![]() This figure shows a GEO satellite system. This diagram shows that the GEO satellite is connecting a telephone caller on land with a ship. The telephone call is routed through the gateway to the satellite. The satellite transponder converts the frequency and retransmits the signal back to earth. A satellite telephone on the ship receives the radio signal and converts it back to the original audio signal. The diagram also shows that a separate ground control facility is used to monitor and control the position of the satellite. GPS Quick Course, 2nd Edition Books
